Why Material Thickness Matters for Laser Cut Files

Tabs, slots and finger joints are usually designed around one specific sheet thickness. A file created for 3 mm plywood may not assemble correctly if the real material measures 3.4 mm, 1/8 inch or 4 mm.

If the material is thicker than the design thickness, slots may be too narrow. If it is thinner, joints may be loose. Proportional scaling changes every part by the same ratio so the complete construction remains geometrically consistent.

Important: the complete drawing is resized. The finished model will become larger or smaller by the same percentage.

What the Tool Preserves

The resizer downloads the result in the original file type and preserves supported SVG or DXF colors, paths, entities, layers and relative part positions. The width and height are always scaled together, so the drawing is not stretched in only one direction.

Material Thickness Is Not Laser Kerf

Material thickness is the depth of the sheet. Kerf is the width removed by the laser beam. This tool resizes the complete drawing for a different material thickness; it does not independently redraw slots or apply kerf compensation.

For a precise press fit, inspect the exported file in your laser software and make a small test cut. Machine calibration, focus, cutting settings, material compression and kerf can all affect the final fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I resize a 3 mm laser cut file for 1/8 inch material?

Yes. Confirm 3 mm as the original design thickness and enter 1/8 inch, or 3.175 mm, as the measured material thickness. The complete file will be scaled to approximately 105.83%.

Can the resizer help with slots that are too tight or too loose?

It can help when the mismatch is caused by using material with a different thickness from the original design. Kerf, machine calibration and material compression may still require a test cut or an additional adjustment.

Does the tool resize only the tabs and slots?

No. It proportionally resizes the complete SVG or DXF drawing so that every part stays consistent with the original construction.

Will the finished laser cut model become larger or smaller?

Yes. All dimensions change by the same scale percentage. This method is best when proportional changes to the final model size are acceptable.

Are my SVG or DXF files uploaded to a server?

No. Compatible files are processed locally in your browser and are not uploaded to Vector Painter's servers. Refreshing or closing the page clears the active drawing from the tool.

When should I not use proportional scaling?

Do not use this method when the final external dimensions must remain fixed, only selected joints need correction or the project combines parts designed for several different material thicknesses.
